Welcome to summer!

In January I some time off for three months. It was a good time for a pause, after 19 years at the company and a solid 18 months spent advancing four of our six priorities. During that period, we brought on several new initiatives such as our Payor Strategy, our ISNP (insurance company), adjusted to sweeping reimbursement changes, and onboarded several new leaders into new roles where they are helping our company become stronger and more successful.

Time to exhale. We should all do that from time to time.

What did I do during my leave? I switched off my “human doing” and spent more time with my “human being.” For the first time, I spent extended intentional time in nature. I appreciated each day feeling good, beautiful weather, and nature, despite the unfolding of a worldwide pandemic. It gave me a settled perspective.

When it was time to return, Rick Miller asked me to step into a strategy role. To be honest, I had to research what exactly that meant (see this Harvard Business Review article).

Turns out, I have been progressing toward this role throughout my 19 years at Avamere.

What have I noticed since I’ve been back?

Well the Ava-world certainly has attention laser-focused on keeping people safe and supported during the management of this health crisis. This brought out the best in us, as well as daylighted some opportunities to strengthen and solidify.

What has impressed me most is an increased sense of collaboration amongst the division leaders. I also think we have the best COO (Bob Thomas) this company has ever had – I attribute this leadership coherence equally to the qualities of our leaders and Bob’s guidance. I have seen Mike Billings bring solid organizational skill to the innovation role as he leans into our future program and product development.

I have also appreciated the absolute ownership of methods and results by our division leaders and our CEO and COO. I have never heard our CEOs or COOs as articulate in the detail from the divisions as I have this past year.

In the newly created role of Chief Strategy Officer, I will work directly with Bob Thomas, Chief Operations Officer, and Rick Miller, formulating and leading company-wide initiatives related to short and long-term strategy, helping ensure continuity and focus across the Avamere Family of Companies. I will also play a role with our team in studying marketplace and network strategies, business development, and long-term customer retention and experience.

We are in the process of our strategic planning for 2021 and beyond – and looking forward to sharing with you where we expect to be in the next three to five years.

I am happy to be here amongst long-time friends and colleagues, charting the course for our future. I’d love to hear from you on your ideas for company direction. Email me at dmueller@avamere.com.
